Thorunn finished B.Sc. in nursing from the University of Iceland in 1994. Then worked at Heilbrigðisstofnun Suðurnesja / Sudurnes Hospital and Health Center from 1994-2010. Inpatient ward (1994-2000) and then as head of the department until 2003. From 2003-2007 she planed and opened a new 5-day hospital ward.

2006-2007 Þórunn studied at the University of Iceland, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Later she added Diploma in surgical nursing (perioperative nursing) to her work profile.  Then working at Landspítali Háskólasjúkrahús / The National University Hospital of Iceland and worked there until 2015 or when the project of making the Klinikin Armuli began. Today she workes as a fulltime perioperative nurse as well as being the head of the surgical department.
